ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (GRAMMAR GRADES K-6)

At Grace Christian Academy, the classical model (called the Trivium) starts with the Grammar stage. This covers grades Kindergarten though the 6th grade. During these school years, the student learns the fundamental rules of each subject. In these school years, the student’s approach to subjects is ‘Knowledge Mastery’. The student’s brain is like a sponge; they can absorb information and can easily retain facts upon facts. Their subjects are as follows:

  • Bible: The focus of the instruction is reading, understanding, memorizing and obeying God’s Word. There is prayer, scripture reading and teaching/discussion. The goal is to encourage students to seek personal application of the Scriptures, give priority to God and His Gospel, and memorize and apply his Word to their personal lives.

  • Reading: The focus is equipping each student with phonetic skills, foster a love of reading good books, teaching them to read carefully with understanding, and develop fluency.

  • English/Grammar: The focus is repetition of the parts of a sentence. Students learn how to diagram short sentences and learn the different parts of speech. This grows each year with a natural progression of more complex sentences.

  • Mathematics: The goal of instruction is to ensure that students have a thorough mastery of basic math functions, understand the conceptual and practical way of math through story problems and ultimately understand that we serve a God of order who created math in the very beginning.

  • Science: The goal of instruction is to teach foundational scientific concepts, develop a strong vocabulary of science terminology, and apply hands on activities through different teaching approaches.

  • History: The student learns themes, historical timelines, important events and famous people. This is done through singing, chants and other memorization. History is also woven with the Bible in order to teach a Biblical worldview.

  • Art/Music: The focus of the instruction is suited for each grade level and progresses naturally. The younger students learn about singing and continue their memorization skills and the older students learn to read music and play an instrument.

  • Latin: The introduction starts in the 3rd grade. The students learn vocabulary words and progress to learning grammar and the basic parts of speech. They also learn the Latin is the ‘Mother of all Languages’ which helps them lay a foundation for other Romantic Languages which they will learn as they grow older.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (LOGIC GRADES 7-8)

The second part of the Trivium is the Logic stage. In this stage, the students have taken their memorized facts and information and now develop it into formal reasoning. The students are introduced to formal Logic class where they begin to ask the question ‘WHY?’. They start to piece together the knowledge and start to think critically and logically. Their subjects are as follows:

  • Bible: The focus of the instruction is to encourage students to seek personal application of the Scriptures. Reading, discussing, studying and applying God’s Word is practiced during each Bible class.

  • English/Literature: The students cover a wide variety of Classical literature including Treasure Island, Across Five Aprils and ending with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Robinson Crusoe. They learn to read for comprehension with a result of writing research papers, creating well thought out debates and learn how to improve sentence and grammatical structure.

  • Mathematics: They are introduced to Pre-Algebra and then Algebra. They learn the natural continuation of natural order and begin to expand into more complex algebraic equations. The students also learn how to apply the problem solving strategies from the grammar stage and learn how to apply that to real life word problems.

  • Science: The students go in depth on learning about God’s creation. They begin with the life sciences, the scientific method, and gradually move into Earth science, all while being taught with a Biblical Worldview.

  • History: They cover Omnibus 1 and 2, which covers Ancient History and Medieval History. These two time periods are also woven into Literature in order to give the student a strong foundation of both subjects.

  • Art/Music: The focus of the instruction is suited for each grade level and progresses naturally. The students take what they have learned in the grammar stages and then apply it to more complex studies. Students will be taught basic piano skills and also are introduced to guitar and basic choir skills.

  • Spanish: the students have a strong foundation with Latin; that in turn helps them move into another Romantic language. They understand the fundamentals on how a language is taught, how to conjugate verbs, and where the root of certain words come from.

  • Logic: students learn how to define terms and explain relationships between statements. They are trained how to spot fallacies in everyday media and conversation. They learn how to argue from a logical point of view that is supported with facts, deep reading and analysis of the subject that is being debated.

HIGH SCHOOL (RHETORIC GRADES 9-12)
Coming Fall of 2025 starting with 9th grade

Grace Christian Academy is very excited to announce that in the Fall of 2025, we will be opening a high school starting with the 9th grade! We are looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for us and are praying that He directs our steps!

The third and final part of the Trivium is the Rhetoric stage. In this stage, students learn the skills to wisely and effectively present what they have learned. They learn to express themselves in a wise and persuasive way. This last and final stage is a culmination of all that they have learned from the beginning of their Classical education. This is often done through a senior thesis or through large class projects and they learn to take the abstract and logic and apply it to all academic subjects. The students continue to grow in their knowledge of the subjects taught. With this growth, they are introduced to Rhetoric class (versus Logic class) and learn to hone their skills in presentation, writing and speech. In this last stage, the Classical Model comes to fruition and flourishes and the students begin to look into different branches of careers that are intriguing to them.
